Prepare for a stress-free, money-saving move with these helpful tips
If you’re packing up and moving elsewhere, or even in the process of doing so, you’ll be pleased to know there are many ways to make your move a little less stressful, and less expensive! As long as you prepare yourself for the big move and devise a rough pre-move plan, you can bypass any potential difficulties and unnecessary expenses, allowing you to get settled into your new home in no time at all.
If you’re concerned that the big move is going to be unmanageably costly and that the removal of your belongings will cut into your budget, then consider embarking on a do-it-yourself move. Although the thought of hiring a van and hiring someone else do all the lifting seems pretty much hassle-free, you’ll actually save quite a bit if you accumulate some willing helpers, who will lend a hand to move out of your current home.
Before moving your goods, it’s worth having a huge clear out so that you don’t end up cluttering your new home with items that you don’t actually want or need. Get yourself down to the nearest car boot, or save your unwanted items to sell online if you don’t have enough time to do this beforehand. This will not only provide you with a few extra pennies, but it’ll also make moving house significantly easier, as you’ll have less belongings to worry about!
After you’ve had a quick clear out, determine what size van you will need in order to complete the move. If you’re only moving small items and a couple of larger furnishings then a Transit van could be the choice for you. Consider asking one of your friends to drive the van, in order to avoid any expensive ‘man in a van’ fees. Do a little online shopping and look for the best deal on van hires. You could also ask a family member or friend if they are willing to lend you a van, saving you even more money in the long run. Finally, plan where you are going to park the van and how many trips (to and from the new house) you may need.
After a plan is in motion, you can then start to pack everything up. Get as much help as possible, in order to make the whole packing procedure a little less stressful on your part. Ask friends, local supermarkets or even your workplace for any boxes or spare materials that will keep your items safe during the move. Although heavy-duty bin bags are relatively easy to carry, there’s always the risk of them ripping or collapsing, leaving all of your belongings far behind!
Finally, make sure you have reliable home insurance and household contents cover, in order to ensure you are fully covered if anything does happen to go wrong on the day.
